Colin Powell Recognizes Arafat's Authority Colin Powell made the following statement today: "(I) call on Chairman Arafat to work with Prime Minister Abbas and to make available to [him] those security elements that are under his control so that they can allow progress to be made on the road map —end terror, end this violence." I thought that a key aspect of the road map, at least from the perspective of Israel and the U.S., was for Arafat to be left without any political or military authority, and to essentially be relegated to a symbolic role. Instead, Powell recognizes that Arafat remains in full control, and requests that he "make available" to Mahmoud Abbas the PA security forces, rather than giving Abbas control of such forces. Sadly, the Bush Administration continues to deviate from President Bush's June 24, 2002 speech, demanding Arafat's replacement. Israelis (and visitors to Israel) are paying the price of this deviation. | "
